Hi, Brennan! I can't take credit for the info, I just posted it! :) That said, I do feel strongly that using natural resources like sun is one of the simplest ways we can remove ourselves from the unsustainable system, and implement solutions that everyone can use.

So far we only had one bout of threats from police that the marine batteries we're using were a fire hazard. I'm sorry so much stuff of yours has been confiscated. Occupiers held their ground and the police gave up eventually. It's interesting isn't it? First we get complaints about us using the power grid, then complaints that we shouldn't use batteries :P Well tactics of naysayers and those clinging against change are whole other topics, I suppose!

Anyway, we're really excited about the sustainability aspects of OccHou. Shamus puts a lot of thought and effort into developing and maintaining the various sustainability projects and components. He's happy to talk with others trying to do the same stuff, so I am emailing you his contact info.

From OWS Sustainability in NYC,

Hello Cassie!

Thanks for creating the pamphlet, it's a supremely helpful writ. Here at OWS, the occupations gas and bio-diesel generators were confiscated last week, which is not necessarily a bad thing...we'd been working to phase out the fossil fuel. Just in time, Time's Up!, our local environmental direct action organization, along with PedalPowerNYC and people from Occupy Boston, came in with energy producing bicycles. The prototype is a stationary exercise bike with a (rollerblade) wheel attached to a dynamo that rests on the front bike wheel. It creates a charge, an energy, which goes into a charge converter, then through a oneway diode and then into a deep cell 12v storage battery. 11 more bikes are coming in that will work the same way but be road bikes on training stands. We'll give these bikes to different working groups such as Library, Medic, Kitchen, Comfort, Media.

We are taking out compost twice daily by bicycle (xtracycle or cart) to local community gardens and farmers.

There is another R, as well, the one i consider the 4th is Refuse. Refuse to buy or use anything new.

And, spelling for waste, not waist. Waste not.

Cheers. OCCUPY EVERYTHING!

Thanks Cassie!

Brennan, OWS Sustainability
