Over the past few weeks, thousands of individuals have been protesting around the country, and here in Texas, as a part of the "Occupy Wall Street" movement. So, it's a good time to remember that public debate is essential to a free society.

If you are planning to protest, make sure you know your rights, and what to do if you're stopped by police.

• You have the right to remain silent. If you wish to exercise that right, say so out loud.
• You have the right to refuse to consent to a search of yourself, your car, or your home.
• You are required to provide your name, address, or date of birth to a law enforcement officer upon request.
• You can be arrested for refusing to identify yourself to an officer.
• If you are not under arrest, you have the right to calmly leave.
• What you say to the police is always important. What you say can be used against you, and it can give the police and excuse to arrest you -- especially if you "bad mouth" an officer.
• You may photograph or videotape police officers performing their job in public, but do not interfere with police action.
