CORPORATISM: "SOLD GLORY", THE U.S. FLAG AFTER CITIZENS UNITED v. FEC
Global Revolution 1: American Revolution 2: Day 9: Communication 1
25 Sep 2011 (g1a2d0009c1)

According to the Associated Press, with the release of their 5-4 decision re Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission on Thursday 21 January 2010 the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) made it legal for corporations to "spend as freely as they like to support or oppose candidates for president and Congress". Effectively granting corporate entities the status of "supercitizen", going forward our multinational corporate giants -- even those with foreign ownership -- can for all intents and purposes buy and sell popular votes and political candidates as easily as if they were commodities like oil or sugar. In recognition of "the rise of the corporations", we were inspired to improve upon this earlier attempt at giving Ole Glory a makeover so that the Stars-and-Stripes more accurately reflects the core political value of contemporary America: "Sold Glory"...

EXCERPT FROM THE DISSENTING OPINION OF JUSTICE STEVENS

"In a democratic society, the longstanding consensus on the need to limit corporate campaign spending should outweigh the wooden application of judge-made rules. The majority's rejection of this principle 'elevate[s] corporations to a level of deference which has not been seen at least since the days when substantive due process was regularly used to invalidate regulatory legislation thought to unfairly impinge upon established economic interests.' Bellotti, 435 U. S., at 817, n. 13 (White, J., dissenting). At bottom, the Court's opinion is thus a rejection of the common sense of the American people, who have recognized a need to prevent corporations from undermining self government since the founding, and who have fought against the distinctive corrupting potential of corporate electioneering since the days of Theodore Roosevelt. It is a strange time to repudiate that common sense. While American democracy is imperfect, few outside the majority of this Court would have thought its flaws included a dearth of corporate money in politics."
