I watched the small group of you today from my 38th floor downtown office window. The office I've had for the last 10+ years, working in the Oil & Gas Industry for the past 27+ years. I just got a raise & a bonus. As I watched your little band, I wondered: Who among you is qualified to say how much I should be allowed to make? How much is enough? Who draws the money line? What is my fair share of the pot, and what will you do to make sure I only get my fair share? Who will be in charge of those decisions? Will I be fairly represented by this decision-maker, or will I be punished because I've worked hard for over 30 years, saved my money, invested well?
Lest you think I'm some princess who doesn't know real life, let me say nay-nay. I started out as a school teacher, and cleaned houses to supplement my teaching income. When I married, my new husband was laid off the day he returned from our honeymoon. I've had many ups & downs during my O&G days, and my husband had many years in an industry which has been severely affected by mergers. There have been times when we were both laid off at the same time and had no health insurance. Yet we kept on, persevered, worked at McDonald's, babysat, cleaned homes, had one car with no A/C in Houston. You get the picture? Where I am now is NOT luck, is not privilege, is not the good 'ole boys club *as I am female*. Where I am now IS getting up every day, putting one foot in front of the other, continuing to watch & learn from the world, never giving up, never saying never.
Remember the revolution in Russia? That worked out really well. What about Animal Farm? All is rainbows & unicorns. And then….
ALL ANIMALS ARE EQUAL
BUT SOME ANIMALS ARE MORE EQUAL THAN OTHERS.
When you demonstrate that you can make financial decisions for me, and the other 338,000,000+- citizens of this great country, that are totally totally fair, non-punitive, non-partisan, non-biased, non-judgmental, then I will take you seriously.
Until then, just remember how Animal Farm ended: Four legs good, two legs better.
